04/07/2018 Message relay from RYA. Public consultation on Future Funding of High Performance Sport in the UK

From: Ian Walker
Sent: 14 June 2018 13:57
Subject: Public consultation on Future Funding of High Performance Sport in the UK

As you may be aware there has been considerable discussion in the media about the funding of elite sport in the UK and in particular about the merits and fairness of UK Sport’s ‘no compromise’ approach that has seen more successful Olympic sports receiving considerably more funding than others. Last week UK Sport launched a Public Consultation on its future investment strategy, which will come into effect in April 2021 post the Tokyo Games. They want to ensure that the consultation acknowledges the views of all those with an opinion on UK Sport’s future vision and investment approach. The press release can be found here.

This consultation, independently delivered by Future Thinking and in collaboration with The Sports Consultancy, will allow UK Sport to identify which aspects of high performance sport, and the system components are viewed as most important in shaping sustained success and inspiration. More specifically, what this should look like and how these should be measured in the future.

The global consultation is now open, with an online survey available for anyone to complete.  I would like to ask that you and your friends, family or colleagues please take 15 minutes to complete their online survey.  This online survey will stay open until 19th August 2018.

Clearly the very purpose of this survey is to give you the opportunity to give your personal thoughts but please consider the considerable success that the current system has delivered since 1997. In 1996 Team GB were an embarrassing 36th in the Olympic medal table compared to 2nd in Rio 2016. In the last six Olympic Games since the advent of UK Sport funding, sailing has won 25 medals, 12 of which have been Gold, compared to 9 medals, 3 of which were Gold, in the previous six Olympic Games. A ruthless focus on winning medals by UK Sport has delivered a step change in attitude, performance and results. A future radical shift in funding could undermine much of the good work that has been done and undermine the hopes and dreams of our future potential medal winners both in sailing and other sports.

The RYA believe that funding is a privilege not a right, we firmly support a funding system that rewards efficiency and excellence and we do not believe it should necessarily be more focussed on team sports or those sports deemed to be more popular.

As someone who competed in the Olympic Games both before and after the advent of UK Sport funding I can vouch for the incredible impact it has had, not only on the lives of those who have been fortunate enough to compete for Team GB, but on the millions of youngsters inspired by their success. That is why I am kindly asking you to take some time to give your opinion and help to encourage UK Sport to continue what has been an amazing success story.

Kind regards,

Ian
