THE CHAPMAN CHALLENGE 18/19th July 2015 OPEN EVENT.
RNSA Lead: This event is marked as a challenge as the blue clay at Chapmans Pool contains white ammonite type shells. Your task is find some and take photos for the Web Site. They are fragile. Do not place yourselves in danger under high cliffs. Despite "Heatwave" being grounded, well not literally, I have looked at this event and provide the following data for any YCW yacht members that may wish to go.
Objective: To sail out of Weymouth and Portland early on Saturday around 0700 to catch east going tide to Chapmans Pool just to west of St Aldhelms head. To stay overnight and return by departing at 12:00 to catch west going tide.
Distance from RNSA Moorings approx 16 NM. Estimated Travel time 4 hrs. ETA 11:30-12:00
TIDAL Data taken from Navionics. I think the times are BST. Havent got to grips fully with the package but you can always cross check.
From a tidal arrow near Chapmans the following information is provided:
Saturday 18th July just falling off springs. Max Rate 2 knts.
07:04 Tides turns Easterly.
Low Tide at 09: 16
12:05 Tide turns Westerly
High Tide 15:56. Sunday: Max Rate 1.9 knts.
07:47 Tides turns Easterly.
Low Tide at 10:02 13:26 Tide Turns Westerly.
High Tide 15:56.
Current Forcast. Can be found here. http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2634202
My only concern here is the Saturday 18 mph WSW wind at 16:00 but it drops away later.
Sunday turning Southerly 11 mph. Looks to be a very wet day to sail back
Catering: Suggest all self catering unless you wish to undertake the long walk into Worth Matravers but the Pub http://squareandcompasspub.co.uk/index.php/food.html only serves Pies and Pasties. You could try the tea rooms http://www.worthmatraverstearoom.co.uk.
Walking: The path from the Beach is not too steep but is long and rocky in places. Or use the vehicle track. You can get to the Top of St Aldehelms head with its interesting balancing stone and the Coast Watch lookout. You can see all paths from Google maps in sat view. See photo by clicking on "Photo"
If any of you wish to go I will put your boat name and skipper name up on the Web Site.
I will be working on Heatwave to try to get a new prop fitted so won't be on this one.
Kind regards Brendan.
