Berthing:RC(C)Tim Clark/Jon Glass will confirm final plan.
RC(C) will be not be attending this year. A final list of boats will be issued to BRNC about a week beforehand. For those arriving on the 25th, we’ll have a ‘wet run’ for the afloat ‘Pontoon Party’. BRNC Dartmouth to be requested for the use of the Dartmouth buoys. A1 to A6. Note: There will be a charge/per boat for the use of a buoy per night. Portland Branch will refund this for Portland boats. The buoys have two strops and can hold two boats. Ensure boat sides are protected as buoys are GRP and will move as the tide changes. Three of the biggest boats will be placed on the first buoy to be used as a base for an afloat ‘pontoon party’ on Saturday 27th to watch the air display. It will be a bring your own drinks to supplement a small RNSA contribution, plus a communal contribution of things to eat. As regards to the pontoon, if we have too many for a boat party, we will have to consider the pontoon, but we will also have to be prepared to scrub off the seagull mess, and think about a wet weather routine. The pontoon is shown at bottom of plan on west side of the river. CLICK ON IMAGE FOR LARGER PLAN which shows info known to date. Note: Last year Jolly Tack Tar and Jackaroo were invited to join us after the Racing. |
Plan from 2015. Ignore the allocations:

Possible Programme:
‘Icebreaker’ at 1730 on Thursday 25th, the Regatta Party on Friday26th , and the Dinner on Saturday 27th:
The Icebreaker:
A gathering of those around to say hello.
Bring drinks (Beer, wine and soft drinks equivalent to a half bottle of wine per head) and ‘nibbles’ (crisps, peanuts etc plus something to put them in). Absent containers will be repatriated!
Venue, probably on one of the boats at A1 buoy
Dress, come as you are
The Regatta Party:
On board boats at A1 buoy
Something to make the most of! For those of you who have not been before, you get a grandstand view of the air displays from the College buoys
Again, please bring drinks with you and the sort of food you would expect at a finger buffet, plus crisps and peanuts. Bring it warm, or on a tray ready to warm in A1 boat's oven
Dress casualDinner:
You cannot book at a restaurant in Dartmouth during Regatta Week
Solution: invade the chosen venue en masse
The closest suitable place to the dinghy landing pontoon is the Floating Bridge which has used before. The manager's advice is to arrive early between 1730 and 1800 Saturday 27th.during the repeat air display. In 2015 we manage to sit in the same area, and the food was good. Individuals will be responsible for their own bills. Portland Branch will make a contribution to some wine.
Dress casual.
Portland Programme:
Any Portland boats attending the Dartmouth rally are advised that it will be getting dark at 21:00.
Sail Plan:Portland.
Portland Boats are sailing to Skippers choice to Day/Location and Time. So far no decisions taked on Return Journey. Some will be there for Ice Breaker others will be later.
The proposed sail plan was set in the Gallery below subject to all conditions that will apply on the day(s). This plan would indicate a total event time of 5/6 days. Individuals may not have the availability to do this programme but it is there for you to use as you wish.
Now the plan is drafted, tides and streams have been looked at to see the feasibility of the plan. Assuming a departure date of 24th August. Seems OK with an estimated departure time of o7:00 am from Portland.

ROUTE PLAN: (CLICK ON THE IMAGES)

On Wednesday, 24th of August of 2016, the sun will rise in Plymouth (Devonport)at 6:21 h and sunset will be at 20:17 h. The tidal data shown below indicates choices have to be made on how this trip could be sailed. On the basis that this trip is about 10 to 12 hrs a foul tide will be involved in either direction. The tides are two days before neaps on the Wednesday.

Based on this and winds no more than 7 knts it should be possible to take the inshore passage and arrive at Bill at 08:40 on Wednesday. Push hard at 5knts to get away from Bill on course 315 deg true then at around 09:40 start to come back westerly and stay high in Lyme Bay for a lighter tide. Follow the curve of Lyme Bay until tide turns at 15:40 to make your way to Dartmouth.

Alternatively the offshore route around Bill could be taken. The difficulty here is to get out of the stronger tide once past the Bill. If you go south you could end up facing two foul tides.

On Monday, 29th of August of 2016, the sun will rise in Plymouth (Devonport) at 6:28 h and sunset will be at 20:07 h. The tidal data shown below indicates that to return to meet the tide gate at Portland Bill of 15:25 would need a departure at 03:25 in the dark. On the basis that this trip is about 10 to 12 hrs a foul tide will be involved . The tides are two days after neaps on the Monday. If you should leave at this time you will have 6 hrs good flood first then 6 hrs foul ebb to arrive at bill 15:25 and take inshore passage.
However if you leave departure until say around 06:25 to sail in the light you should tkae the off shore route as in the image.

THE RIVER DART:
Tidal Streams: The River Dart has strong tidal flows during flood / ebb as the river fills or empties. The river can run @ up to 3 Knots making berthing or picking up buoys hazardous when in full flood / ebb. Avoid berthing near strong flows if possible.(Will be I day before neaps need to arrive on the turn but then water will be flowing out.Note the Tidal streams indicate max rate of 1.5kts on flood at Castle so do they not include river flow??

Rough guide: From - 5 to 0 HW Devonport river is on flood ie flowing in from Sea. From +1 to -6 HW Devonport river is on ebb ie flowing out to Sea.
The BRNC buoys are situated above the higher Ferry and are large disc shaped and yellow. They have two pickup lines and can take two to three boats depending on size. They are GRP covered and due to the effects of wind and river flow can rub against side of boat so you should have some matting over the front each side as fenders will just roll off.
